They don’t call it The Garden of Eden for nothin’! Christ United Methodist Church’s community garden entices you to wander down its bark-chipped paths, sit on a bench under the fir trees, or relax in the shade of the gazebo and watch grapes ripen on the vine. Both congregants and neighbors are invited to enjoy the lush growth of organic vegetables and herbs, watch gorgeous clematis winding their way up trellises, see ornamental grasses waving in the breeze, and experience a rainbow of blooming flowers and shrubs.
Check out our wildlife area in the back of the garden, complete with a mason bee box, puddling dish for thirsty butterflies, and plants loved by beneficial insects. Or take a peek at the medicinal herb and tea garden with plants that bring us health and healing – this educational garden is being developed by a horticultural student, and you can pick a sprig of mint for tea, or some sage or oregano for cooking a savory summer dish.
When the temperatures climb, enjoy the outdoors but stay out of the sun. Our gazebo area can be used for relaxing, small gatherings, picnics, or for just reading a book in the quiet of a balmy summer evening. Kids are welcome as are well-mannered dogs on leashes. The garden is open for all to enjoy, but please don’t disturb individuals’ produce or flowers — they belong to renters.
Plots are all rented for 2012, but an exciting array of community service opportunities are available for those who want to putter in the garden. Adopt an ornamental bed, help with watering, or do a special project. Leadership opportunities to run the garden exist as well, for 2013 and beyond. For more information, contact the church office at 503.646.1598.
Come to Happy Hour at the Garden, Tuesday evenings once a month, 6-7 PM, to learn about gardening, work with others, and enjoy relaxing after the workday.
