Sandia National Laboratories has entered into a Strategic Partnership Project (SPP) with Elemental, a nuclear startup, to develop and commercialize advanced power generation technology. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in the utilization of Sandia's expertise in closed-loop, recompression Brayton cycle systems and its sCO₂ test facility. The Brayton cycle, a power generation method, offers enhanced thermal-to-electric conversion efficiency compared to conventional steam technology. By eliminating water-cooling-related energy losses and leveraging the unique properties of sCO₂, Sandia's Brayton cycle design promises a more efficient and sustainable approach to electricity generation.
The partnership with Elemental focuses on two key technologies. The first is a 1-MWe natural-gas-and-waste-heat-fired power and cooling system, tailored for small modular data centers and remote military installations. This system aims to provide efficient power and cooling solutions in challenging environments. The second technology is a scaled-up 10-MWe system, capable of operating with various heat sources, including Elemental's ISTR Power System, a sodium-cooled and uranium zirconium hydride-fueled reactor. Elemental aims to have its first system operational by next year and plans for commercial deployments of its Brayton cycle technology in 2028.
