Gaga Ball Tips and Tricks
Learning the Basic Rules
Gaga Ball is similar to dodgeball in that two teams play against each other trying to score points. Unlike dodgeball, however, it is played in a six foot diameter octagonal pit. Additionally, players are not allowed to throw the ball at another player and there is no out of bounds.
Basic Objectives of the Game
The objective of the game is to hit the opposing players below the knee with the ball in an effort to knock them out. When a player has been hit, they are considered out and must stand alongside the pit for the remainder of the game.
Handling the Ball
When a player begins, they must pick up the ball and hit it with an open palm rather than throwing it at another player. Additionally, they must pivot their feet before hitting the ball and a player is not allowed to use the same hit in two consecutive turns.
Areas Off Limits
In a game of gaga Ball, players are not allowed to hit the ball with their fists, feet, or head. Additionally, players are not allowed to catch the gaga ball as this is considered a violation of the rules.
Winning the Game
The game is usually won when one team has eliminated all of the members of the opposing team. However, depending on which variation of the game is being played, there are other ways to win as well.
Gaga Ball is a fun game that can be played with both children and adults. Following the rules of the game ensures that everyone has a enjoyable time.

Teaching Your Group the Rules
Getting everyone on the same page with the rules of gaga ball is crucial for having an enjoyable game. We recommend breaking up into smaller groups and explaining the rules while demonstrating the game yourself. You can also print out an easy-to-follow diagram of the court and other important information when introducing the game.
How to Pose an Offense
Given that you’re playing within a circle, the goal is to use the ball to knock over an opponent. When posing an offense, look for prime opportunities to make a clean hit on the ball carrier. You should also focus on catching them off balance or make a surprise attack when they least expect it.
Appropriate Stance and Movement
Players should be aware how to move with a gaga ball in their hands. You should never swing the ball backward or throw it with full force. Keeping upwards in an offensive stance with arms outstretched will keep you ready to block or dodge a strike with agility. Moving your feet side-to-side is the best way to stay one step ahead and make an offensive strike fast.
Get Creative With Blocking
As the defender, you’ll be charged with paying attention to the court and blocking your opponent’s attack hurled in your direction. Take note of the ball carrier’s weak spots and throw a curveball if needed. If the ball is thrown near your feet, you can always block it with your feet if it’s within reach. Don’t be afraid to be creative and use your peripheral vision in order to keep your opponent on their toes.
Know The Rules Of The Court
Gaga ball courts generally require that the ball should drop below an opponent’s waist in order to be considered a point. This does depend on the local court guidelines, so double check these if you’re playing in an unfamiliar area. Additionally, if the ball ever leaves the court, it’s an automatic point against that team. By having an understanding of the court rules, you’ll be able to modify your strategy accordingly in order to make the most of each game.
Safety: Always First
When playing gaga ball, you should always stick with a soft surface ball and make sure all participants are wearing the right protective wear, such as gloves and helmets. Encourage your group to be conscious of the environment and each other while playing to establish a safe, fun atmosphere for everyone.
Gaga ball is a ton of fun for kids of all ages, so make sure you get everyone in the group up to speed on the rules before jumping in. With the right strategy and understanding of the gaga ball court, you’ll be able to give your team an edge and help guide them to victory.
